First of all... the correct pronunciation of Biloxi is "be-luk-see". Anytime anyone pronounces it the way it looks, they are instantly pegged as a tourist. Biloxi has been divided into three main geographical areas for better understanding; South Biloxi, North Biloxi and Woolmarket. South Biloxi is identified as the area EAST of Debuys Road all the way to the Biloxi/Ocean Springs Bridge and NORTH to Biloxi Back Bay. If you are looking to be in the Casino industry, you've hit the jackpot! South Biloxi is home to eight Casinos and a booming beachfront. The photo above is of the "Crusin' The Coast" event held every October coast wide. It is an explosion of hot rods and hot rod enthusiast showing off their latest creations, collector cars and trucks. North Biloxi is identified as EAST of the Biloxi River to D'iberville and EAST of the Tchoutacabouffa River (Yes, it is spelled correctly). Woolmarket is described as NORTH of I-10, EAST of the Biloxi River and NORTH of Hwy 67.
South Biloxi is home to the Keesler Air Force Base and our admired Hurricane Hunters. The entire gulf coast owes gratitude to these brave men and women that fly into hurricanes every season to give meteorologists the best data to forecast the direction of each tropical storm. A lot of military personnel come to Keesler Air Force Base for training and seem to come back to retire since the Mississippi Gulf Coast is one of the top retirement destinations in the country. The majority of convention space is also located in Biloxi at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum and Convention Center.
South Biloxi is also home to the Biloxi Shuckers, our professional baseball team part of the MILB. The team is the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers and is a member of the Southern League which started in 2015. The Biloxi Shuckers play out of MGM Park across the street from the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. The team name was chosen via a fan vote in November 2014. Other finalists were the Beacon, Mullets, Black Jacks, Schooners, and Shrimpers. The name "Shuckers" celebrates Biloxi's heritage as a center for the oyster and seafood industries that still remain today.
North Biloxi is separated from "Biloxi" by the Back Bay. This area is largely residential and has plenty of options for new construction homes in an array of beautiful communities. North Biloxi is at a higher elevation that Biloxi (South of Back Bay) which provides better insurance rates. North Biloxi is home to the Sunkist County Club and Golf Course pictured above.
It is also home to Virginia College, Biloxi. Most of commercial retailers after Hurricane Katrina relocated North for this reason and also to gain better traffic from the Cedar Lake exit off Interstate 10. The Cedar Lake area has had tons of commercial and residential growth over the last ten years and will continue to do so. North Biloxi has very few areas where property values are under $100,000 which makes for a better real estate market. The new Galleria Mall going in to D'Iberville next door will surely impact values in a positive manner as it is scheduled to be completed in October 2015. It is said to employee 2,500 people so as people start going to work here, they will be looking for a home closer to work. The Popps Ferry Bridge is set to be replaced along with the widening of Popps Ferry Road all the way to scenic Highway 90.
This area is described as NORTH of I-10, EAST of the Biloxi River and NORTH of Hwy 67 according to the MS Gulf Coast MLS. Woolmarket is a big favorite of locals due to it's high ranking schools, convenience to Keesler Air Force Base and frankly, all the goodies that Biloxi has to offer without all the hustle and bustle of the city.
Another reason people are moving to the Woolmarket area is the new Master Planned Community of Tradition. At first it seems to be a bit far out, but with the new Hwy 67 running through Tradition, you are just a few minutes from the Promenade in D'Iberville or Hwy 49 area in Gulfport. Tradition is a "front porch" styled community with restrictive covenants, YMCA, Santini's Market, and walking trails. It is a unique community with many amenities and well worth driving to to check out before making a decision on where to buy or build your home.
Fred Haise, Jr. is an American engineer and former NASA Astronaut. He is one of only 24 humans to have flown to the Moon, as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 13. He was to have been the sixth human to land and walk on the Moon, but the mission had to be aborted due to a spacecraft failure. He went on to fly Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests before retiring from NASA in 1979. Haise was born in Biloxi, Mississippi. He attended Biloxi High School and Perkinston Junior College (now Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College).

George E. Ohr was an American ceramic artist and the self-proclaimed "Mad Potter of Biloxi." In recognition of his innovative experimentation with modern clay forms from 1880–1910,some consider him the father of the American Abstract-Expressionism movement. The Ohr-O'Keefe Museum Of Art is a non-profit art museum located in Biloxi, Mississippi, dedicated to the ceramics of George E. Ohr.
Biloxi is the "Birthplace of Barq's Root Beer". Edward Barq moved to Biloxi from New Orleans with his wife in 1897. The following year he opened Biloxi Artesian Bottling Works. For many decades Barq's was not marketed as a "root beer." This was in part a desire to avoid legal conflict with the Hires Root Beer company, which was attempting to claim a trademark on the term "root beer." It was also due to differences from other root beers at the time. The base was a sarsaparilla drink of the style of the late 19th century, in a formulation with caffeine, less sugar, and higher carbonation than other brands, though with less of a foamy "head." It was decided to market the soft drink simply as Barq's. The traditional slogan was the simple affirmation "Drink Barq's. It's good."
For dog lovers out there, North Biloxi now has the only public Dog Park on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It is located on Popps Ferry Road just south of the Margaret Sherry Library. The City of Biloxi has plans to improve the dog park over time with new lights and a paved parking lot. Many area residents are excited to have it as it is a great place to meet your neighbors.
